we've been learning about how a young school age child (i.e. a 4-6 year old) not only requires breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but should always get a mid-morning snack, a mid-afternoon snack, and if he/she goes to sleep late, an after dinner snack too. why should that only apply to young school age children? i pretty much do the same thing. except... i sort of combine breakfast and mid-morning snack into sporadic snacking throughout morning lecture.
this afternoon after our final lecture of the year, i walked home and had a mango for my afternoon snack. i was pretty excited about it - this was the first time i had bought a mango in a while, and i only did it this time because it was a dollar at kroger and i thought i'd give it a chance, to see if mangoes here would taste ok. problem is, i can't tell for sure whether the mango was only ok and not amazing (much to my disappointment) because of the quality of mangoes supplied to this part of the u.s. or my poor judgment in how ripe it was before eating it. i think it would have been sort of sad watching me eat this mango today, since i was so determined to make the most of this mango that i kept eating it. it was good, but the problem was it was super fibery. strands of mango got caught in between my teeth as i continued to eat the fruit. it was sort of gross.
anyway, the past few weeks of nutrition lectures mixed in with lectures on growth and development have gotten me thinking more about my diet. and by thinking more i mean caring more... and less at the same time. i eat a lot healthier for breakfast, and sometimes for snack, i.e. the mango. but then there's been several times even this week alone when i haven't been minding the lectures warnings on obesity or the fact that my dexa scan revealed that although i have awesome bone density (no need to worry about osteoporosis anytime soon), my fat percentage is about 10% above what i thought i could have been. that includes indulging in a krispy kreme custard donut and milk tonight after midnight. it's sort of like this, if you think about it. so far my wii fit age on the second try has been good though, so i think i'm ok for now.
so this is the beginning of my new blog. i figure i should chronicle my adventures, misadventures, or lack thereof from med school in some place so that i can look back later in life and see how things have changed (or not changed) ever since i was an unripened, unwise med student mango.
